Route instructions

[1] The walk starts from the car park on the south east side of the reservoir, reached by turning left before the access road crosses the reservoir. From the car park take the path along the south side of the reservoir for approximately 500m. Turn left onto the moorland at a gate waymarked Greenleighton Walk. Cross a small beck and continue up the hillside to meet another path and turn right still climbing uphill. Follow the path uphill, crossing a bridge with a Greenleighton Walk sign, passing a copse and shake holes on your left then an old quarry also on your left. Go through 2 gates and continue to the trig point at the top of the hill.

Be aware that there might be bullocks in the field where the trig point is.

To avoid climbing up to the trig point go straight ahead after entering the field to reach the edge of a wood where there is a marker post. Go left along the edge of the wood, turning right at it's end to leave the field through a gate.

[2] Bear right to the left hand end of a conifer wood and go downhill alongside a wall at right angles to the wood. Pass close to a house on your right and bear right down a grassy area through another strip of conifer woodland. Greenleighton farm is on your left. Pass through a gate and bear diagonally right to the far corner of the field and cross a stile into the wood. Follow the path ( marked as the Greenleighton walk ) along the east and north edges of the wood and go through a kissing gate onto a forest track. Turn right through the gate onto the moor.

The Right of Way on the OS map is no longer accessible through this woodland, hence the diversion around the east and north sides..

[3] Go straight ahead downhill across the moor on a grassy path and parallel to a fence on your right. Near where the fence turns right the path goes straight ahead with Greenleighton Walk marker posts ahead. Where the path forks take the right hand fork towards the trees surrounding the Reservoir. Where the path crosses a stream go slightly right to find an old wooden bridge, if needed. Follow the Greenleighton Walk marker posts ( with yellow tops ). Where the path forks take the right fork to reach a stone wall with stile ( photo). Cross the stile and go straight ahead, eventually going down hill to the burn running off the moor. Do not cross the burn but follow the path on the left of the burn now marked as the Waterside Trail. Enter the wood around the reservoir through a gate and follow the path around the head of the reservoir crossing two footbridges.

[4] Where the path leaves the trees there are 2 gates. Take the gate on the right and go uphill on the path continuing along a flat field with a view over the reservoir. (NB.This is a permissive path and is not open from the 10th April till the 10th May). After a gate, turn right and go downhill, looking out for the path going left through the bracken. There are several Waterside Trail marker posts along this stretch to lead to a kissing gate and re-entry into the wood around the reservoir. Turn left and follow the path back along the reservoir banks to the dam. Cross this to your starting point.
