Village Hall Gas Lane Middleton-in-Teesdale DL12 0TN

Parking is available at the starting point. This route is also accessible via public transport. From Barnard Castle, take Scarlet Band bus no. 95 or 96.

[1] From the village hall head up Gas Lane towards the main road. Cross the main road and turn right to proceed along California Row. At the public footpath sign on your left, turn left to walk towards a gated stile.

[2] Follow the path and stile to walk between two large barns. From there proceed to Stanhope Gate Farm.

[3] Keep the farm to your right as you walk under an arch. Continue up the hill with the wall to your right to reach the read. Turn left along the road.

Watch out for traffic.

[4] Walk along the right-hand side of the road past High Dyke to reach a T-junction. Cross the road here and go through the gap in the wall.

[5] Follow the path bearing right to come to a corner of a field. Turn left here to follow the path through the woods to come to a metalled lane. Turn left along this lane for a short distance until you reach the main road.

[6] At the main road, cross and turn right downhill with houses on your left. When you reach the first wooden signpost, turn left again and walk through the buildings to reach a field.

[7] Do not cross this field but turn right to reach a stile at the corner of the field by the houses. 

[8] Cross this stile, then turn left and follow the lane around the graveyard, which turns sharp right at the corner.

[9] Turn left just before the houses, keeping the playground on your left. Follow this path behind the village to reach the main road at California Row.

[10] Turn right here and then cross the main road to walk down Gas Lane to return to the starting point.
