Route instructions

[1] As you exit the village hall premises, turn right and cross over the upcoming small school road and continue along Gas Lane.

[2] When you get to the end of the street, you will see some school gates on your right and you should cross over to your left. Once you crossed the road, you should immediately see a green lamppost signposting local places of interest.

[3] You should now continue along the pavement and cross over the small upcoming road. So far along the road please note that the pavement does get rather narrow.

[4] Ignore the upcoming path which bears to the left and continue on forward parallel to the road.

[5] As you continue, you will see a Tourist Information Board on your left which may harbor some interesting information about Middleton-in-Teesdale. Just after the tourist board, cross over the small road and follow the path left as the texture of the path changes.

[6] Head towards the Wrought Iron Fountain in Horsemarket and follow the path around heading down Bridge Street (B6277).

The fountain was erected around 1877 to commemorate R.W. Bainbridge, an agent of the London Lead Company.

[7] Just before the bridge, turn left through the narrow gap in the low wall. Follow the footpath with the river on your right to reach the river flow gauge station.

The path is uneven and will be muddy in wet weather. Note that the path may be impassable if the river is flooded. The river level, measured at this station, can be obtained from the www.environment-agency.gov.uk website.

[8] Continue along the riverbank path. Just past Leekworth Farm to the north, the river bends northwards. Do not go through the gate but turn left and head towards the farm.

[9] Pass by the south of the farm and continue along Leekworth Lane. There are good views of Kirkcarrion to the southwest.

Kirkcarrion is marked by a clump of pine trees on the horizon. It is the burial site of a bronze age chieftain and reputably haunted.

[10] At the road junction between the houses, you should turn left and continue along the street until you reach the main road. Turn left again and walk past the school signs and gate and then turn left again and continue along Gas Lane back towards the Village Hall.
