Route instructions

[1] As you exit the village hall premises turn right and cross over the upcoming small school road and continue down Gas Lane.

[2] When you get to the end of the street, you will see some school gates on your right and you should cross over to your left. Once you crossed the road, you should immediately see a green lamppost signposting local places of interest.

[3] You should now continue along the pavement and cross over the small upcoming road. So far along the road please note that the pavement does get rather narrow.

[4] Ignore the upcoming path which bears to the left and continue on forwards parallel to the road.

[5] As you continue, you will see a Tourist Information Board on your left which may harbor some interesting information about Middleton in Teesdale. Just after the tourist board, cross over the small road and follow the path left as the texture of the path changes.

[6] Head towards the Wrought Iron Fountain in Horsemarket and follow the path around heading down Bridge Street (B6277).

[7] Just before the bridge, cross the road and follow the footpath on the north bank of the river to reach the footbridge over Hudeshope Beck.

Although this road is not generally busy, please take care when crossing it.

[8] Cross the footbridge and continue along the river bank path. Where the river bends to the northwest, note the attractive cascade on the opposite banks.

In wet weather, the path might be muddy and slippery, so please take care.

[9] After about 200m the river (and path) veers westwards. At this point, turn right along the lane to reach a small group of buildings.

[10] At the T junction, just past the buildings, turn left and walk to the B6277. As you reach the main road, you should join the pavement on your right. Walk along the pavement and observe the cascade beneath the bridge on Hudeshope Beck. Cross the bridge and continue walking along the pavement through Marketplace.

[11] As you are walking, you will see Forresters Hotel on your right and also Middleton-in-Teesdale Fish'n'Chip shop. A little further down the road, the local Tourist Information Centre is situated on the left hand side of the road.

[12] Cross over the upcoming road and join the pavement again with the Wrough Iron Fountain on your right. Continue on this road until you reach the green signposting lamppost again and cross this road. As soon as you have crossed, turn right and walk back along Gas Lane to reach the Village Hall.
