Getting there

Parking is available along Stephenson Way close to the Leisure Centre in Newton Aycliffe. This route is also accessible via public transport. From Durham, take Arriva bus no. 7 or 7A. From Bishop Auckland, take Arriva bus no. 5 or 5A. From Sedgefield, take Arriva bus no. 21. From Darlington, take Arriva bus no 5, 5A, 7, 7A, 8, 8A, 16 or 21.

Route instructions

[1] Cross the road and turn left to walk towards the public footpath sign. Turn right to follow the tarmac path until it leads up to the houses. Don't walk up to the houses, but continue to walk further on the grass with the houses on your left. Follow the beck until you reach a bridge on your right.

Be careful when crossing the road.

[2] Cross the bridge and turn left. Follow this path for a distance.

[3] When you reach a footbridge on your left, cross over it and turn right to follow the footpath underneath the road bridge. Follow the path around to the right with the beck on your right.

[4] After a distance, you will reach another footbridge on your right, cross it and turn right on the path and follow it uphill.

[5] When you exit the footpath and reach houses, turn right and walk along. In front of a house, turn right  to follow the path around. It will turn left when you follow it further.

[6] Cross the small road and walk along the houses to reach the main road.

[7] Turn right on the pavement to walk downhill. Cross over at the pedestrian island, follow the path up left to turn sharp right to walk down to the trees again.

[8] Turn left before the footbridge and follow the way back until the footbridge you crossed in the beginning.

[9] Don’t cross the footbridge, but follow the way along with the beck on your right. Stay right when it forks out. At the end, you will reach the main road, cross over to return to the starting point.

Next to the many leisure centres, Newton Aycliffe also has its own Fell Walking Club that offers walks for all ages and everyone who is interested in walking. Furthermore, Newton Aycliffe FC is a popular football club in town which competed in the FA Cup for the first time in history in the 2011-2012 season.
 
The Durham Wildcats, a successful basketball team, are based in Newton Aycliffe and they play their home games in the Leisure Centre of Newton Aycliffe!
 
Famous sportsmen from Newton Aycliffe are Ross Turnbull, who is goalkeeper for Chelsea F.C., Jason Steele, who is current goalkeeper for Middlesbrough FC and George Courtney, who is a World Cup referee.
