Route instructions

[1] As you exit the Four Clocks Centre turn left and head down Newgate Street passing Hogan’s pub on your right.

[2] You will pass a Northern Echo Office on your right before reaching Darlington Building Society on your left. Cross the street here at the pedestrian crossing.

[3] Once you have crossed the road you will see an information board in front of you titled ‘Theatre Corner’, you will also see a small plaque on the wall to the right of the information board and if you look left you will see a statue of ‘Stan Laurel’.

[4] You should continue your walk on the pavement to the right of the information board, this path is leading you down Newgate Street. As you go down Newgate Street you should pass many shops and stores.

[5] Follow Newgate Street until the end where you bear right onto the Market Place with Bishop Auckland's Town Hall.

[6] Continue on walking down Market Place and cross over the road, in front of you will be the archway leading to Auckland Castle. Once you have crossed the road, turn left.

[7] Auckland Castle will be on your right. Follow the path round to the newly named pub 'The Merry Monk' and turn right down Wear Chare Road down the hill towards the river.

Take care on this road as the pavement is narrow and so is the road.

[8] At the bottom, cross the road and turn left passing through the fence to walk along the river bank.

Take care when there are horses in the fields.

[9] Pass under the viaduct keeping to the river side. At the foot of the old bridge take the steps leading up on to the bridge.

[10] Once on the bridge turn left and walk along Newton Cap Bank towards the Rugby Club sign. Cross the road at that point and go down Bridge Road to the Rugby Club. You will come to some buildings on your left, keep to the tarmac road and follow it round so that you keep those buildings on your left. Walk along until you can see the rugby ground on your right and some big stones on your left. There is a gap in the stones and an obvious path leading up into a wooded area. Follow this path.

[11] Keep to this path until you reach the end of the path and the beginning of Hexham Street. Bishopsgate Lodge is on your left.

[12] At the end of the street cross the road, turn right along West Road and follow this road round until it becomes Etherley Lane. Turn left into Prince’s Street. The sign is not immediately obvious so turn left when you have The Clairmont Family Centre sign in front of you.

[13] Cross Prince’s Street and carry on to the roundabout at the bottom.

[14] Turn right into Bob Hardisty Drive, walk up to the controlled crossing and go through the car park back to the Four Clocks Centre.
