Route instructions

[1] As you exit the Four Clocks Centre turn left and head along Newgate Street passing Hogan’s pub on your right.

[2] As you follow Newgate Street you will pass a Northern Echo Office on your right. When you reach Darlington Building Society on your left, cross the street at the pedestrian crossing.

[3] Once you have crossed  the road you will see an information board in front of you titled ‘Theatre Corner’, you will also see a small plaque on the wall to the right of the information board and when you go left you will see a statue of ‘Stan Laurel’.

[4] As you continue with the walk you should continue on the left passing the statue of ‘Stan Laurel’ and follow the pavement round. There should be a brick wall on your right and Bob Hardisty Drive on your left. You will soon go past the Boyes building on your right.

[5] As you continue along the pavement there will be a black fence on your right for a short part of the way and shortly after the fence you will be coming to a busy road which you should cross over and continue up the pavement which is on a slight incline.

Take care when crossing this busy road.

[6] At the top of the inclined pavement you should ignore the path to your immediate left leading over a bridge and continue on the same path which bears left. There will now be a high rise building on your right. As you proceed you should ignore the steps to the left of you and continue down the pavement which is now going downhill.

[7] Cross over the road ahead of you with the bus station on your right. Once you have crossed over you should follow the pavement left. The path will soon bear right and lead to a pedestrian island with a roundabout on your left. You should cross over the road using the pedestrian crossing and then turn right down High Bondgate.

[8] As you continue down the path you will come to a small road which you should cross over and as you head along you should see Café 29 on your right hand side and North Bondgate car park on your left. As you pass the car park you will need to cross a small road.

[9] After the North Bondgate car park you should continue forwards passing the car wash and two small roads on either side of it. After you have passed the car wash you will come to York House Children’s Day Nursery on your left and Innfusion Bar Lounge on your right.

[10] Situated in front of you is Bishop Auckland’s Town Hall.

Bishop Auckland’s Town Hall has previously been: a temperance hotel, Conservative Association offices, an indoor market, an air raid shelter, turkish baths, public toilets and a library and arts centre. For information on events at town hall please visit: http://www.bishopaucklandtownhall.org.uk

[11] As you continue walking, the job centre will be on your left and over the road in front of you will be a pub ('The Merry Monk'). You should cross over this road towards the pub and just after the building you should cross the road and bear right, you are now walking down ‘Market Place’.

[12] Follow the path as it bears left towards Auckland Castle. As you head towards the grounds you should have cream-coloured houses on the left of you and a stone archway in front of you. You should go through the stone archway and head towards the castle.

Take care as this road has no pavement.

[13] As you continue you will see a sign saying ‘Auckland Castle Chapel & Grounds’ to the left of you. After you have been to the left to view the Castle and Grounds you should start exiting the grounds and head for the stone archway.

[14] You should continue walking through the archway and past the cream-coloured houses. When you get to the road you should cross over and stay on the street to the left (one way street).

Take care when crossing this busy road as there is no designated crossing for pedestrians.

[15] As you continue walking down Market Place you will go past Chang Thai Restaurant on your left and St Anne’s Centre will be on your right. You should proceed along past Connexions on your left and the taxi rank on your right.

[16] Keep following this path as it bends round to the left onto Newgate Street.

[17] Just past Nat West on your right is an information board which you may like to read labeled ‘Merchants and Bishops’. You should continue on walking down Newgate Street until you reach Darlington Building society again.

[18] Cross the street and retrace your steps back to the Four Clocks Centre which will be on your right.
