Route instructions

[1] As you exit the Four Clocks Centre turn right and cross over the small road in front of you onto Newgate Street.

[2] You will see an Army Recruitment building on your right and a busy main road will be on your left. Walking along Newgate Street, you should pass the King's Head Pub and the Bishopgate Medical Centre.

[3] Morrison’s Supermarket will soon be coming up on your right and you should follow the pavement around to the right, at this point you should still have Morrison’s on your right and Halfords should now be over the road on your left.

[4] Cross over the upcoming road and keep walking ahead until you get to the road crossing, you should cross over here and turn right. You will now be on the same side of the road as B&Q. Once you get to the B&Q sign you need to cross the road again and this will lead you to some bungalows.

[5] Go through the gap in the stonewall and turn left. You will have some black railings on your right and red railings on your left, B&Q will also be on your left. You will soon come to a green gate on your right, you should use this gate to enter Etherley Lane Recreational Park.

[6] When you walk into the park B&Q will be behind you and as you continue forwards you will see a football pitch to your left and tennis courts to your right.

Bishop Auckland Tennis Club uses these tennis courts and offers coaching, friendly competition and competitive match play for young and old alike. Coaching for juniors takes place each Tuesday and Thursday from May to September, and a junior club meets on Saturday afternoons during the same period.

[7] If you look to your left you will see a path leading to a children’s play area, this play area offers varied obstacles for all ages. As you follow the path around you should stay left when the path comes to a T junction and as you walk, you should soon see the play area left and Etherley Lane Nursery School will be on your right.

[8] As you are walking, the path will soon change gradient and you will be walking uphill slightly. You will shortly see the park exit gates. Exit the park and turn right onto Etherley Lane. Follow Etherley Lane for a while, crossing over different small side streets.

[9] As you continue walking down Etherley Lane you should cross over Clarence Street and then a small side street. You should also cross over Ninefields road. At the sign saying 'The Gables', you should see a nice view of the Wear Valley area on your left.

[10] As you walk past the bus stop on your right, turn right down Princes street with Clairmont Family Centre on your right. You will now be walking slightly downhill. As you are walking, cross Braithwaite road (If you go down Braithwaite road this will take you back into the recreation park!). As you continue downhill you will see St Peters Church on your left.

[11] Follow Princes Street until you reach a roundabout where you will pass Cables Taxis on your left. Cross the smaller road and then almost immediately cross over the next road which can be busy at times. Once again cross a smaller road with The Clothing Alteration Co. on your right.

[12] Follow the path as it bears right at the Darlington Building Society and this will lead you back onto Newgate Street. You should cross the small road you are coming up to and pass the Chocolate Café and Hogan’s Bar on your left and the Four Clocks Centre will soon be on your right.
