This is a circular walk through the fields of Sedgefield to Hardwick Hall discovering a part of the beautiful old village of Sedgefield.

Getting there

Parking is available (off-street and side streets) around the Village Green. You can also access this route via public transport. From Durham to Sedgefield take Arriva bus no. X1. From Darlington to Sedgefield take Arriva bus no. 21.

Route instructions

[1] Start from the Village Green with the church behind you. Cross North End / Durham Road, turn right and follow the pavement until you reach the Hardwick Arms Hotel on your left.

[2] Walk through the entrance arch of the hotel and follow the path until you reach the public footpath which leads through the fields. Go through the gate. 

Watch out for cows and sheep in the field. 

[3] Follow the well-defined path through the field. At the end you will reach two gates. Go through both of them and follow the well-defined footpath in the next field which leads you straight up the hill. 

[4] At the end of the field, you will reach a gate which leads on to a busy main road opposite the entrance of Hardwick Hall Hotel. Cross the street and walk through the entrance. Take the first street to your right and follow it.

Take extra care when crossing this busy road. 

[5] You will walk past the hotel at the back and the car park to your right. Walk further until you reach a crossing of footpaths (in front of a sign which leads up to Low Hardwick). Turn right and you will walk along with the old stables to your right and a golf course to your left. 

[6] You will come at the end of the footpath. Go straight on through the defined path in the grass and follow it until you reach a metal gate. 

[7] Turn right in front of the gate and walk along the fence until you reach a gate that leads on to a footpath along the main road. Turn left on that footpath.

Take care walking along the fence as it is an electric fence.

[8] Walk along the footpath until you reach the entrance to a farm on the left. On the other side of the road is the entrance to the public footpath (look out for a red dog waste bin). Cross the main road again, go through the gate and follow the public footpath which leads back to Sedgefield.

Take extra care when crossing this busy road.

[9] At the end of the footpath come out through the gate and go straight up the hill following the tarmac road alongside the housing estate.  You will come out at Neville Drive.

[10] Cross the road, turn right and walk up to the main road , cross that and then turn right to walk along the pavement. 

[11] You will cross Pine Ridge Avenue. Follow the street further until you will see a public footpath sign to your left. Follow it and you will reach Hawthorn Road. Turn right and follow it until you reach Cherry Tree Drive. cross the street and turn right again.

[12] You will reach The Lane. Cross over and turn left. You will reach a public footpath sign on your right, turn into it and follow it.

[13] You will cross over The Garth and follow it further. At the end there is a Doctor's Surgery on your left. keep right and you will reach the Village Green again. Turn right, cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and go back to the starting point. 

The Sedgefield Harriers are a local running and athletics club. They compete in road race, fell races, cross country and on the track. The Sedgefield Harriers host the Serpentine Trail race each September. The club was recognised as National Development Club of the Year and as Club of the Year in 2011.
