This is a circular walk which heads down Market Place incorporating Market Cross and taking a quick detour to look at the magnificent views of the Bowes museum before returning through the quiet side streets of Barnard Castle.

Getting there

Parking is available around the starting point (off-street parking, side street parking). There is also a short stay car park in the Market Place. The route is also accessible via public transport. From Darlington to Barnard Castle, take Arriva bus no. 75.

Route instructions

[1] Turn right from the Methodist Church into Horsemarket and proceed to Pelican Crossing by Britannia Building Society.

[2] Cross over to the Co-op and keep walking on the pavement down Market Place towards Market cross (also known as the Butter Market)

 

(A)The Market Cross was built in 1747 and used to hold town council meetings and courts on the first floor while the lower floor was used as a lock up. 

 

[3] At Barclays Bank corner beside Market Cross continue left along Newgate with St Mary’s parish church on right.

 

[4] Keep walking along Newgate until you come to the road junction with St Mary’s Catholic Church in front of you.

 

[5] Cross over, go past the church and walk along towards the Bowes Museum with the museum wall on your left. You will soon come to the main gates of the museum which will give you a magnificent view of this French style chateau!

 

(B)The Bowes Museum was purpose built in the 19th century by John and Joséphine Bowes and took 23 years to complete. The diverse collection in the museum spans three floors of the magnificent building.

 

Once you have seen the museum you should turn around and walk back to St Mary’s Catholic Church.

 

[6] At St Mary’s Catholic Church turn right up Birch Road and walk along past the Rugby Club on your left, once you arrive at the T junction turn right up Queen Street.

 

[7] At the United Reform Church on your left turn down Hall Street, walking past the library on the right and go under the archway turning right back into Horsemarket.

 

[8] Go past the Witham Hall and continue to the pelican crossing. Once you have crossed over you should turn right and return up the pavement to the Methodist church.
