Route instructions

[1] Proceed to the front of the Methodist church and continue on the pavement along Horsemarket and Market Place to just beyond the Buttermarket to a convenient crossing at the top of The Bank.

[2] Cross to the front of the art shop and go ahead on the cobbles and across the church car park, taking the paved path between the church on the right and church hall on the left.  At the T-junction turn right down the lime tree avenue in the churchyard.

[3] Go ahead down the steps with two bollards, (with a former school to the left), to the paved area below.  Continue ahead towards the Demesnes, bearing left to the path going up left over the grass against a high wall, with the Demesnes to the right.

(A)The Demesnes was bequeathed to the town in former times to be kept as an open area for the benefit of the community.  From the top there are good views over Startforth on the far side of the Tees.

[4] Where the path levels out there is soon a wide gateway to the left into Parsons Lonnen, a track leading to Newgate.  At the end of the track turn right, crossing the road when traffic permits, soon reaching the main gates of the Bowes Museum.

[5] Go through the gates and forward to either cross the parterre garden to the steps below the terrace to the right or, to avoid the steps, follow the road up right, taking care with traffic coming down.  Go up onto the terrace, crossing in front of the museum.  Here there are good views out over the countryside towards Barningham Moor.

[6] Continue to the end of the terrace and cross the road, taking care with traffic coming up, to follow the tarmac path ahead over a grassed area and then between trees.  Turn right at the T-junction of paths, and go ahead to reach the back gate of the museum.

[7] Go through the gate and turn left, and continue ahead, crossing the road when traffic permits.  Ignore Dawson Road and the path beside the open grassed area, to take the wide path ahead, with houses of Wilson Street left and red painted buildings to the right.

[8] Soon the path narrows, with a cemetery behind railings left and another cemetery behind a wall to the right.  Follow this well-used path as it bends slightly, soon passing between buildings on both sides, to reach Queen Street.

[9] Turn left and cross Queen Street, turning right almost immediately into Ware Street and round the corner to reach Hall Street, with the library on the corner.  Turn right down Hall Street.

[10] On coming out into Market Place turn right into Horsemarket and along the pavement to the pedestrian crossing.  Cross and turn right to continue back to the Methodist Church and the starting place.
