Route instructions

[1] Leave Fulforth Centre and turn right onto Front Street. Turn immediately right into Charlaw Terrace and walk past Fulforth Centre on your right.

[2] Keep to your right and walk down Charlaw Terrace. At the end of the street, bear right and then right again, heading on the track through the trees. Horses will be in a field to your left.

Take care. This area may be muddy at some times.

[3] Walk to pass through the large concrete blocks and then follow this track forwards all the way to the end of the track passing two more concrete blocks. This track as it ends will bring you out on a small side road. Once on the road, turn right with the car scrap yard on your left.

[4] At the end of this side road, you will reach another road (Lingley Close). Turn right and follow Lingley Close until the end.

[5] You will reach the main road, Front Street. Turn left and go uphill. Follow the road until Cross Lane on your right. Turn into Cross Lane.

[6] Stay on the right hand side of the road walking next to the houses and keep an eye out on the opposite side of the road for the next public footpath which appears. When you see the public footpath you should cross over the road and take the footpath leading up to the farm.

[7] Follow the path as it bears right and then right again passing some set back houses on your left. The track will then once again bear left and lead you past houses on your right. The path will then bear left then right heading past Nettlesworth House Farm.

[8] Keep going on this path as it bears left and then take the next path which shoots off to the right. Keep walking heading over ‘Black Burn’ and follow this path all the way back to the main road.

[9] When you reach the road cross over and then turn right heading back towards Sacriston. Keep walking for quite a distance with the main road to the right of you. Back in Sacriston, follow this road further. You will pass the Library on your right.

Be careful when crossing the road.

[10] You will reach Front Street. Turn right and follow the road to the Fulforth Centre.

Sacriston has a vibrant sporting community now. The new community centre and the cricket and football teams offer great opportunities for athletes. But even a long time ago, by the end of the 19th century, the town was offering sporting activities. Back then pubs (e.g. Colliery Inn and Robin Hood) had handball courts built around them and miners could play games there similar to squash. Instead of using rackets, they used their hands.
