Getting there

Freeman's Quay is a short walk from Durham's railway and bus stations. Parking is available in the adjacent Walkergate, Freeman's Place car park.

Route instructions

[1] From the road junction outside Freeman's Quay, turn left along the road in front of the Premier Inn. At the end of the Premier Inn, ascend the steps and bearing right at the top ascend further flights of steps into the square in front of the Gala theatre and go through this square to Claypath.

[2] Turn right and go through the Market Square bearing left into Saddler Street,and then bear left again to descend Elvet Bridge Road. At the start of the bridge turn left and descend steep steps and go towards the river.

[3] Turn right under the bridge along the riverside footpath and after passing under Kingsgate footbridge, turn right and ascend steps to the level of the footbridge which should then be crossed.

The footpath might be muddy at times and take care on the steps as it is a steep climb.

Durham Amateur Rowing Club (DARC) is one of the country's oldest clubs which was founded in 1860. They start their training from the clubhouse on the River Wear. The club takes part in the government scheme playing for succes and helps to boost literacy and numeracy.

[4] On reaching Church Street at the end, turn right for 100m to the entrance to St Oswalds churchyard and enter. At the war memorial, bear right to the top of the wooded slopes down to the river.

The footpath is uneven and can be muddy at some times. Watch out for the river.

[5] Follow the footpath down the slope with the river on your right and follow the lowest path along the river banks to Prebends bridge.

[6] Continue on the riverbank footpath on the same side of the river, passing under Framwellgate and Millburngate bridges.

Durham Regatta has been held on the River Wear in Durham since 1834. It is the second oldest regatta in Britain. 

[7] At Pennyferry footbridge, turn right and cross the river and bear slightly right past the car park to your starting point.
