This is an easy circular walk from The Graham Sports Centre at Maiden Castle along the River Wear to Shincliffe. It is suitable for pushchairs and refreshments are available in the sports centre or in various places in Shincliffe.

Getting there

There is public parking just off the A177 near the entrance to Houghall Gardens and the Pump House restaurant. There is a bus stop directly opposite the sports centre with regular buses 56, 57 and X1 to Durham 

Route instructions

[1] Leave the Graham Sports Centre and walk towards the River Wear up a path between the athletics track and a playing field.  You will pass the Robert Gillespie Boat House on your right.

Formed in 1877 Durham University Boat Club has won the British Universities Championships six years in a row.  Since 2004 21 DUBC athletes have represented their country at international level and some of the club's most famous names are Olympians James Clarke, Lou Reeve and Stephen Rowbotham.  

[2] When you reach the footbridge over the river cross over it and turn right onto the tow path.  Walk along this path with the river on your right and fields to your left.

[3] When you reach the main road (177) cross over the road to the Rose Tree Pub and turn right onto the footpath that goes over Shincliffe Bridge alongside the road.  Stay on this path and pass Houghall Gardens on your left.  Take care crossing the road.

[4] When you reach Houghall College on your left turn right and cross the road to return to the sports centre. Take care crossing the road.
